Day 3: Arusha – Tarangire National Park

This morning after a scrumptious breakfast, you will check out of the hotel. Your guide, will be waiting and ready to start your adventure after a short briefing. After the vehicle has been loaded, you will start your safari and get on the road to Tarangire National Park. The park which is roughly the size of Luxemburg covers an area in the region of 2600 km². Bush savannah, seasonal marshes and formidable baobab trees make up the landscape of this nature reserve. The Tarangire Park is probably one of the best places in East Africa to watch and to get up close to elephants. This is not only because of an estimated 4000 animals but also the elephants are not bothered by the vehicles at a relatively close distance. As well as the elephants, the park is the habitat for Maasai giraffes, various gazelle, antelopes, buffalo, lions, leopards, baboons and more than a hundred different types of birds. There is definitely plenty of wildlife to watch, late in the afternoon you will arrive at Maramboi Tented Camp outside the park for overnight.

Maramboi Tented Camp

This is a unique opportunity to experience and explore the Tarangire and Manyara ecosystem. Maramboi Tented Camp offers permanent camp facilities and endless vistas of rolling golden grasslands and palm lined desert between Tarangire and Manyara Lake. A visit to the area is essential for anyone interested in evolution and the origins of Mankind and an explanation of the Rift Valley and Africa's big picture. It is a complete semi desert experience focusing on game drives. An impressive landscape from the Rift Valley gives the visitor an amazing natural welcome to an area extraordinarily rich in wildlife. The camp offers stunning views of the Manyara National Park, Rift Valley, Ngorongoro highlands and on clear days even Oldonyo Lengai a sacred mountain to the Maasai. In the wet season, the Manyara and Tarangire Pans fill with water which attracts huge flocks of flamingos and other wading birds. The area is also the only place in East Africa where one is often able to see the migration herds of tens of thousands of Wildebeest and Zebra, followed by predators. Although the migrations do occur in other areas of Tanzania, the tree cover prohibits a view of the magnitude that you are able to see at Maramboi Tented Camp because of the exposed nature of the surrounding grassland. 20 spacious tents built on ample wooden decks and 10 lodge rooms, ideal for families.. They all have en suite facilities and private veranda with 24 hours 220V electric lighting. Activities include, game drives, bird watching on the shores of the not too distant Lake Manyara and cultural interaction with Datoga and Maasai tribes, whose bomas populate the adjacent land.

Activities: Transfer to Tarangire National Park, Game Drive

Day 4: Tarangire National Park - Serengeti National Park

Early morning breakfast, check out and drive to the lush crater uplands. Here the fertile soils allow crops such as wheat, corn and coffee to be grown. A short while later you will see the plains of the Serengeti. A lunch break will be taken at Oldupai Gorge. This area today is very dry, it is well known for the work of the famous archaeological couple Leakey. In the sixties the couple discovered the oldest prehistoric human remains and a small museum documents and their work. A visit is optional. The name Serengeti comes from the Maasai word Siringitu and means "endless plains”. You can see why as the grassland savannah in the south stretches to the horizon and is only interrupted by the so called Kopjes (inselbergs). These are bizarre rock formations formed by the weathering of granite outcrops. The plains are the perfect hunting grounds for leopards and other big cats. Here you will have a chance to view these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat. The open roofed vehicles allow uninterrupted views and as the day passes you will reach the goal for the day – the Seronera Valley in the central Serengeti area. Here you will enjoy an evening meal and stay overnight at Kati Kati Camp.

Kati Kati Camp

A mobile tented camp located in Central Serengeti, strategically located to cover the vast Serengeti Plains. The camp offers comfortable accommodation and a unique opportunity to enjoy a real safari camp experience. The camp is only a two hour scenic drive from Olduvai Gorge Museum and Grumeti River. A cosy mess tent is located in the centre of the camp where meals are served. The campfire is ready every evening for appetizers and snacks before dinner. 15 tents with en suite facilities. There are several airstrips in the National Park that receive schedule flights from Arusha as well as charter flights.

Accommodation: Kati Kati Camp

Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Activities: Transfer to Serengeti, stop at Oldupai Gorge (Entrance optional extra)

Transfer: Approximately 6 hours

Day 5 – 6: Serengeti National Park

Breakfast and check out of Kati Kati Camp. Setting off deeper into the Seregeti Plains, the whole day is dedicated to wildlife watching in the Serengeti. The areas that you will visit will depend upon where the migrating herds are to be found. During August month the migration is normally around the Ikorongo area and the northern-most regions of the Serengeti. September they spend a lot of time crossing and re-crossing the Mara River to keep up with the local rains – so their movement is very much dependent on the rainfall. With fluctuations of annual rainfall the exact location of the animals varies from year to year. Your guide, Godlove, however will know the location of the herds and also where to get the best views. Please make sure that you communicate with him all the time to make sure you optimise your time. You will drive all the way up North, during your game drive and reach Bolongonja Under Canvas in the late afternoon.

Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Activities: Transfer and Game Drive back through to Kati Kati Camp

Day 9: Serengeti National Park - Ngorongoro Conservation Area

A leisurely breakfast this morning, because you would need to prepare yourself for the very long drive back to the Ngorongoro Conservancy. Driving through the Serengeti National Park. In the Seronera Valley you will find wildebeest and zebras and often lions and other big cats such as leopards and cheetahs. After lunch at a picnic site, you will drive in the direction of the Ngorongoro Crater. As soon as you have reached the edge of the crater the caldera opens up before you and is a sight to behold (one that took my breath away).

You will be tired once you reach the lodge, but will be able to sit back and enjoy the beautiful view over the Crater – watch the sun go down while sipping on a glass of wine. Overnight at Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge on the craters edge.

Ngorongoro Sopa Safari Lodge

The lodge is perched on the rim of the collapsed volcano, the Ngorongoro Crater, a world heritage site, often referred to as the eighth wonder of the world. It has the most magnificent views over the crater floor, which is home to vast herds of buffalo, wildebeest, zebra, the rare and endangered black rhino, elephant, cheetah, leopard, lion and herds of gazelle and wildebeest. Its position on the Eastern rim of the Crater, allows the most spectacular and uninterrupted views of the sunset.

Accommodation: Ngorongoro Sopa Safari Lodge

Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Activities: Transfer / Game Drive back to the Crater

Day 10: Ngorongoro Crater - Lake Manyara National Park

A mouth-watering breakfast at day break before you drive into the crater. Inside the world’s biggest caldera you cannot fail to be captivated by the rich and diverse wildlife. In the grass stepps and Acacian forest you will find almost every type of animal from the East African savannah with the exception of topi, massai giraffe and impala. It is also possible in a few hours to see the big five – lions, elephants, buffalo, rhinoceros and leopards. After extensive wildlife watching and a picnic in the crater (you allowed to be inside the crater for about 6 hours) you will travel to Kirurumu Manyara Lodge for your evening meal and overnight stay at the lodge.

Kirurumu Manyara Lodge

Kirurumu Manyara Lodge is set high on the edge of the Great Rift Valley, enjoying a marvellous, uplifting and panoramic view eastward over Lake Manyara, the Rift floor and Mt. Losimingori. Behind Kirurumu, the Ngorongoro Highlands rise in green and fertile splendour and form the gateway to Ngorongoro Crater and, finally, Olduvai Gorge, the Serengeti. There is only 27 tented rooms, 2 honeymoon suites and 2 family cottages. A stunning bar complete with sun-deck and panoramic views of the rift valley.
